Video: Number 8 to the Lions’ den’s rafters
Everybody expected a usual, formal number retirement ceremony, but they forgot who they were dealing with. Teemu Selänne had another ace up his sleeve as he took the ice in full hockey gear – minus the helmet – wearing his sweater from the Sochi Olympics.
The Finnish Ice Hockey Association retired his number from international competition in a memorable and emotional ceremony at the Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, the home arena of the Finnish Lions on December 30, 2015, prior to a World Junior Championship game between Finland and Slovakia. The ceremony a very Teemuesque feel of warmth and joy in it.
“It’s been a wonderful year when first the Anaheim Ducks retired my number in January, and now the Finnish federation did the same. I’m very grateful for that,” Teemu said.
Janne Makkonen, the video producer of Selanne.com, put together the tribute video above.
